I'm moving to Louisville next month to a small house about 500 ft from the old Louisville mining town ($950.00 2bd, 1bth, 2car garage). It's an awesome area, but really it doesn't feel like number 1. Everything is very calm, "most" the people are nice, but it does give you that "wow, this is number 1?" feeling. The US must be getting pretty bad if all it takes is a town to be a bit calmer than others for it to be #1.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

are they making a list for 2012?

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

I live here (MIAMI< FL) I was born and raised here ! ! ! Home prices are still way down, great for those that have a secure income to take advantage of the situation. My son went to Milton High School, it is an upper middle class city with an unusually high % of wealthy families. The problem with Milton is too many parents leaving thier children unattended while they travel for business and pleasure. Milton based on what I have seen has a higher teenage illegal drug use rate and under-age drinking problem that some of this countries renowned ghetto's. What makes it worse is these kids are running around with thier parents AMEX Black cards while thier parents leave them to tend to thier extravagant homes alone for weeks at a time. I'd love to see an unbiased study of the dark side of Milton, it would certainly cast the opposite picture as depicted by CNN. Come to think if it, CNN has been doing this for years around the world so I am not surprised. I pray for the youth of Milton but if you have children and are thinking of moving there you are making a very big mistake.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

Who exactly are you addressing? These comments are intended as a response to the above article. The article was specifically emphasizing the need for diversity as a positive for the towns they were praising, and a family similar to yours was the second one described in the article. While racism is still very strong in the country (as most on-line comment sites will clearly show), the defensiveness of your comment may be better placed in response to articles and sites of a more primitive bent. The "you" of your comment was disturbing in it's implications.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

These lists are meant to be a guide. If being in a town that's at the base of and short drive away from the "mountain" doesn't qualify as a mountain town for you, that's OK. It may help others. Colorado seems to be well represented on most lists now. Most people now seem to prefer being near mountains over the beach. I think Money did a great job with the list and it shows what most people are looking for now. Of course, there will always be those with negative comments no matter what is on the list. Still a free country.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

It's interesting to see how different the results are from the same magazine depending upon who is responding to the surveys. In Money Mag's Best Places to Retire 2011 that was just released, the #2 spot in the US went to a Florida town. On The Best Places to Live 2011 list, only two Florida towns made it into the top 100 and one of those was #97. Apparently younger people with children are looking for different things than retirees and I'm sure that includes employment. Florida's nearly highest in the nation unemployment rate doesn't bother those with a secure retirement income, but will cause those that still need to generate income through employment to look elsewhere. Colorado seems to be well represented on just about all list providers.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

With the possible exception of Mukilteo, WA, all the other cities in the Top 10 are SMACK DAB in the path of the ash-fallout SHOULD the Yellowstone Caldera ever explode. I hold three degrees, my wife a Masters in Accounting, my daughter has a Masters in Economics and my son is completing a degree in Visual Communications. This is a typical family unit in the area in which I live (a diversely populated community). You may find it hard to believe that at no time have any of us considered the idea of gang raping anyone.
As an educator who has worked in both in the inner city (which does include all races, but I must admit, mostly minorities) as well as rich suburban schools, I have found that the attitudes you so fear is not race related but socio-economically related. One finds the same attitude in all races that live in a poor environment (some wanting better for their children and some that just don’t care). You also find many of the same value systems in all races that put value in education and a solid work ethic. So to place the value of a location on the color of one’s skin does a disservice to all who believe in the American dream.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

FLAmoveGuide, if I follow your logic, then Money magazine is really for white conservatives, no others need to read this. I find it hard to believe that in this day and age where families of all races have members that go to school, work hard and want the same things in life, ( safe communitiy for their families, good schools, good homes, cultural opportunities, strong economic environment, quality recreational areas, put in many hours to more up in their area of empolyment, that the color of their skin is a factor that would take a city off of the list. What a sad commentary on the American dream.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

It's not racist. It reflects the personal desires of what the readers of Money Mag are looking for in a place to live. If I'm of Asian decent and I prefer to live in an area of town know as "China Town" because I find that more convienent to places I frequent and feel more comfortable, does that make me a racist? It has nothing to do with the exclusion of other races and everything to do with my personal preferances and my right as an American to to live wearever I want. Most (not all) people regardless of race prefer to work and live in areas where the other people who live there are similar to them in income, education, ect. That is not racist. If the same survey was done by Jet magazine the results would be far different and also not racist.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

I purchsed your magazine for the first time yesterday, attracted by the cover article. I am very disappointed by your choices for the 100 best places to live. Nearly all of them have terrible weather (i.e.Louisville, CO) or are so socially conservative (i.e.anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon Line) that it would be difficult for me, a liberal, single woman, to find like-minded friends. I hope your will run an article like this again, and pay more attention to these factors.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

I agree the article was racist. If a town is great, then it should not matter what color it is. Judging a town by color is racist...no matter what. I wonder what towns were taken off this list because of that. Also, I bet if a town was 100% African American and it met all the requirements, it would be on the list. Montgomery Village on the list...has anyone been there who wrote the article? There is nothing small town about it at all. It is all a bunch of rich people trying to compete with one another.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

My parents knew 50 years ago that Carol Stream was a great place to live and raise a family. After starting with the population you then go to "Screen out places ........(towns) with more than 95% white
( people ) Isn't that a bit racist ??? Why should a town be screened out because of the color of the population's skin ?????
Shouldn't we, by now, have acted on the words of Martin Luther King, when he said that we should be not judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character ?? Would your magazine even consider screening out all towns if the populations were more than 95% Black....or 95% Asian...or 95% Hispanic....on and on. If a town meets all the other criteria of Money Magazine then the color of the population's skin should not come into play at all. Next year...please give us the 100 Best Places to Live and base it on all towns, regardless of the skin color.

Re: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2011/

I cannot believe that not one single town from Michigan make the Top 100!
